Muscle Glycogen Utilisation during Rugby Match Play


Professional rugby league players use approximately 40% of their muscle glycogen stores during match play 🏉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Interesting study by Bradley and colleagues (2016) showing that consuming a "higher" or "lower" carbohydrate diet for 36-hr has little effect on pre-game muscle glycogen concentration or performance during a game 🤔 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You may expect there to be a difference during the high-intensity bouts performed during the game, however there was no statistically significant differences. Moreover, as pre-game muscle glycogen concentration was almost identical between groups it's not that surprising that there were not any major differences 📊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The authors did find however that the diet higher in carbohydrate led to a more homogenous glycogen concentration when looking at individual data points, and therefore they suggest that a diet higher in carbohydrates (totalling ~600g) should be recommended for the 36-hr pre-match to ensure most players commence play with appropriate muscle glycogen concentrations 🍞 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Link to the abstract of the current study can be found here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1440244016300044 👈
