Alcohol Ingestion Does Not Significantly Affect Recovery in Females

Alcohol ingestion does not significantly impact recovery from eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage in females 🍾 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Very recent study by McLeay and colleagues (2016) which suggests that females recovery may not be impaired to the same extent as in males through alcohol consumption 🤔 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A previous study by the same authors showed that alcohol aggravates recovery in males following muscle damage (Barnes et al, 2010). Therefore the hormonal differences between men and women may account for the differences between the studies, or the greater alcohol clearance rates in females may be the reason, however more research is needed to investigate these effects ☝️️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Also, due to the low participant numbers there could be a type II error issue (incorrectly accepting a null hypothesis) as some of the stats were trending towards significance. For example as can be seen from the measures of tension and torque, alcohol consumption did lead to larger decreases in performance compared to placebo 📉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But the differences were not significantly different. So as it stands, for females consuming alcohol after exercise, probably isn't going to meaningfully affect recovery, but it's certainly not the most optimal thing to do 😜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Both the study on females and males can be found here: 👈
