Post-Exercise Whey Protein Ingestion Reduces Appetite

Post-exercise whey protein consumption reduces energy intake in a subsequent meal 📉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cool study by friend, and classmate during my MSc, Alistair Monteyne and colleagues showing that whey protein consumption after exercise led to a reduced food intake, which may be partly moderated by eating rate, in a subsequent meal 🤔 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The satiating benefits of protein are well established however, positive energy balance and higher protein intakes are also critical for muscle anabolism. Therefore, consumption of an acute post-exercise protein shake to optimise muscle hypertrophy, may impair overall energy intake throughout the day which could potentially have a negative impact on hypertrophy 🍽 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The current study found that food consumption during an "all you can eat" pasta meal was significantly reduced following consumption of whey protein as compared to a similar carbohydrate-based liquid 🍝 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Although this may be potentially be detrimental during mass building or bulking phases, during a fat loss or cutting cycle, consumption of whey protein post-exercise could improve satiety at subsequent meals and therefore aid in achieving negative energy balance whilst also helping retain muscle mass 💪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Link to the full study can be found here: 👈
